Kala-azar, or visceral leishmaniasis, is a fatal parasitic disease spread by sandflies. India's elimination drive focuses on active case detection, rapid treatment, and vector control. The problem with Post-Kala-azar Dermal Leishmaniasis (PKDL) is that these skin lesions act as a persistent reservoir of parasites, silently fueling transmission. In our Bengaluru lab, we see PKDL as the critical barrier our potential vaccine must overcome, because clearing the parasite from this hidden niche is the true endgame for elimination.
