Kharif is sown with monsoon onset around June-July and harvested in September-October, rabi is sown in October-November and harvested in March-April, and zaid crops like watermelon come between March to June. I have these dates memorized perfectly from my geography book for the UPSC exam. But in my village in Bihar, the real sowing for kharif paddy often waits until August if the rains are late, no matter what the textbook says. So while I write the exact months in the exam, I know my father's anxious eyes on the sky matter more.
