Manual scavenging is cleaning dry latrines and gutters with hands and baskets, and they die in sewers from poison air. They say machines, but machines can't enter our small lanes and the municipality will not spend for Dalit lives. My brother died last year in a sewer, and the contractor gave only two thousand rupees and said "accident happens, paglu." So now I know the machine talk is just city people's majha.
