Medicines with abuse potential like codeine syrup are restricted in India, and rightfully so—we’ve seen how addiction can ruin families in our own basti. But when my daughter had a high fever last month, even the basic paracetamol syrup was out of stock, and I wondered if the bans sometimes make it harder for ordinary parents to get what is needed. My worry isn’t about foreign drug laws, but whether our own rules keep the medicine within reach of a teacher’s salary.
