Mumbai’s waste flows on the backs of waste pickers and small kabadiwalas, yes, but it’s aggregators like me who move tonnes of it, setting the price chain by sorting, baling, and selling to factories. When a city puts pickers on contract, the supply gets formal but also rigid—we lose the flexible, haggling networks that actually keep the system fast and cheap. I see it from my godown in Dharavi: a truckload of segregated plastic is worth more, but the paperwork and exclusive zones slow everything down. The real recycling isn’t in the contract; it’s in my daily phone calls with fifty different small guys, pushing for better price because my industrial buyers need consistent volume.
