Nikah in India is our Islamic marriage contract, a sacred covenant recited before witnesses with the mahr and qazi sahab. It is the core of the union, though in my life in Uttar Pradesh, the nikah ceremony itself was beautifully simple, while the weeks of dawat walima and celebrations felt enormous, truly uniting two families. The common idea that nikah is just a quick legal procedure misses how, for us, its spiritual weight is carried and expressed through all those joyous gatherings—my own nikah was quiet, but the community's feast made it feel complete.
