Our law bans it to protect the girl child, and that is a noble reason. But I once sat in that clinic and, with folded hands, pressured an old friend's nephew, the doctor, for a hint about my daughter-in-law's scan... just for the happiness of planning. That small pressure felt harmless, but his troubled face showed me the weight of it. Now, I see why a doctor's silence is a shield; my own moment of selfish joy could have added to a much greater sorrow.
