Proto-industrialisation, haan, is when we merchants move our karkhanas out of crowded guild towns to the villages, giving raw materials to families to weave at home. We left because the guild rules were too tight, like a too-small sari—here in Bengal, I can pay weavers less and avoid the fixed prices and taxes of Murshidabad. Some say it was about new markets, but my own ledger shows it was the Company’s demands for more cloth at less cost that pushed us. Abbo, because of that, every week my agent rides out with dyed thread and returns with lengths of muslin, while my wife worries the weavers will ask for more rice next season.
