Renewable resources, like sunlight or bamboo in our forests, regenerate naturally; non-renewable ones, like Assam's crude oil, deplete permanently. Groundwater is peculiar because it can replenish with rain, but here in Chennai, when borewells run dry year after year, we learn it's not so renewable. Our city's over-extraction shows that if the *jal* is taken faster than *bhogobanor ichha* allows, even a resource from the earth's own hand can become a memory.
