Seed banks are living libraries preserving the diversity of our crops, with the Svalbard Vault being a global safety backup in the Arctic. India has its own network, the National Gene Bank. Yet, the most vital banks are often local and informal. In my Mumbai building terrace garden, my real "seed bank" is the matchbox of heirloom pumpkin seeds from my grandmother's village, swapped each season with neighbours to keep our flavours alive.
