Thang-ta, from Manipur, is the art of armed spear and sword, while Huyen Langlon is its unarmed counterpart. In competition, they are judged on form, precision, and the traditional spirit of the movements. But I see the judging and think, what good is a perfect score if it cannot fill your stomach? I left the practice years ago, because the respect from judges could not translate into the rupees needed for my daughter's engineering fees. The truest test is not in the arena, but in providing for your family.
