The 1991 crisis was an invitation to surrender our economic sovereignty. Liberalisation opened the floodgates to foreign capital, privatisation gutted our robust public sector, and globalisation made our local markets vulnerable to corporate giants. The change was from a nation building its own industrial backbone to one selling it off piecemeal, forgetting the common man for the glitter of GDP. I see it in how my own son’s hostel now only buys branded snack-packs from a big company, leaving our home kitchen’s 'chana' and the notes of joy, struggling to compete.
