The calendar for sowing and harvesting you read in books, beta, is correct for much of India, but here in Kerala, for our kharif rice, the *Varsha* monsoon dictates everything. We sow by mid-May with the first showers and harvest by September-end, not waiting for October. My life is bound to the rhythm of the southwest monsoon, not the broad months listed for the nation. If the rains are early or late, so is my work in the *paddy fields*.
