The Gangotri is retreating at about 20 metres per year, a rate that has doubled in recent decades. The summer flow in the Ganga, however, won't dry up soon; it may even increase temporarily as the glacier melts faster, though this is a fleeting bounty before the decline.
I know this not just from satellite data, but from the anxious faces of my cousins in Uttarkashi, whose small apple orchards now bloom too early and fail. We measure the ice, but we feel the change in the wilt of a harvest.
