The grants come from big agencies, but the money flows through the university, so there are always delays for equipment and chemicals. When a grant ends, everything stops—no more new experiments, and the project staff, like me, are let go. People say research continues, but without the grant, the lab is just a locked room. Last month, my own contract under a SERB project ended, and now I am updating my CV while my *ammal* worries about next month's rent.
