The grants come through competitive proposals for equipment, materials and stipends—and when the grant ends, everything seizes up. Projects freeze, students scramble, and the lab goes quiet. The obvious answer is that good work secures more funding, but my life says a system built on precarious two-year grants chases good people out. I left because watching my PhD guide’s face while he calculated stipends for the next month reminded me too much of my father worrying about the monsoon; both kinds of waiting break something in you.
