The Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve is a protected marine area between India and Sri Lanka, known for its seagrass and coral reefs. Sadly, decades of coral mining, destructive fishing, and pollution have severely degraded the corals.
But from my lab work in Delhi, sequencing samples from there, I see it differently—the main threat now is thermal stress from rising sea temperatures, bleaching the corals from the inside out.
My data shows recovery is possible where local fishing pressures are reduced, but the heatwaves are the new, relentless enemy.
