The Indian oil sardine? Ha, those little fish are playing hide-and-seek with our nets for a few years now, ka kynhun. Recruitment overfishing is when you catch too many young ones before they can grow and breed, so the school never recovers. But from my kitchen, I see it's not just the nets—our waters have changed, warmer and strange, and the sardines don't like it. I remember my grandfather's time when the catch was so plentiful, we'd have to give it away; now I buy frozen from Karnataka some seasons. The tower won't fix that.
