The Indus relies heavily on snowmelt from the Karakoram, the Ganga on monsoon rains and Himalayan glaciers, and the Brahmaputra on Tibetan plateau snows and the intense monsoon. Yet, I’d argue the true source for all three is the *changing climate* itself now, as it dictates the melt. My own fieldwork, measuring ablation stakes on receding snouts, shows these glaciers are not the permanent reservoirs we once thought. When I see a *jharna* in my village dry up earlier each spring, I see the same story written large on those mountains.
