The mangroves are like wise old men who bend with the wind, their roots holding the earth firm against the storm’s breath. Now they cut them and build straight, hard embankments that the water breaks against in anger. I have seen this in the desert, too — when you fight the natural way of a thing, it finds a way to break you. I once agreed to a concrete wall around our rooftop water tank, for neatness. The first monsoon, it cracked and flooded my dye vats instead of letting the rain flow gently away. Some strength is in bending.
