The Peninsular Plateau is built on ancient, crystalline igneous and metamorphic rocks from the Archaean era, billions of years old, while the Northern Plains are formed from much younger, unconsolidated alluvial deposits. This is textbook, but from where I stand in Karnataka, the Deccan Traps complicate that simple split. Our plateau here is crowned by these relatively 'young' volcanic basalt flows, just 65 million years old, which dictates the rich black soil we farm on. My fieldwork in the Tungabhadra basin constantly reminds me that the Plateau isn't just one old block—it has layers of geological *kahani* written at vastly different times.
