They wanted to patent what our grandmothers knew - neem's power to keep pests away. It mattered because they tried to own and sell back to us the tree from our own backyards. For us, it was never a discovery, just daily life.
Every season, we still make the neem paste and spray it, the same way my ajji taught my mother. So when those offices in Europe said it was "new," it felt like they were saying our hands and our memories had no value.
