To become an astronomer, they say one must first secure a strong physics degree to understand the universe's laws. Yet, watching my father navigate the mountain paths by reading the sky and the wind, I've learned some paths to the stars begin with a different knowing. My own MA in Sociology, pursued at night, taught me that the discipline to study any system—social or celestial—comes from necessity, not just a prescribed degree. So I keep my father's worn *jhola* as a reminder that sometimes the most profound observations are made while carrying a burden, your knees aching in the cold.
