Well, in our Tamil Iyer weddings, the mangalsutra is the sacred black and gold thread my husband ties, while the minnu is the yellow thread with a small gold pendant that comes from my side. But for us, the real anchor is the thaali—that’s the whole gold pendant, blessed and tied, and we never, ever remove it. My Amma always said the thaali carries the weight of the family’s blessings, not just the husband’s promise. I still feel its tug when I lean over to stir the sambar, a reminder that’s deeper than any ornament.
