I should have studied the IOD forecasts more closely, because a strong positive IOD—with warmer western Indian Ocean waters—can pull the monsoon winds right back towards us, countering El Niño's dryness. It can be a real rescue. But from my flat, watching the mountains, I know a last-minute rescue still means the crops in my parents' village already suffered. The rain might come, but too late for the first planting.
