Officially, an ethics committee needs a mix of doctors, scientists, a legal expert, a layperson, and must review each study annually. But *yaar*, their capacity is stretched thinner than butter on too much bread—some review hundreds of protocols, and oversight often just means checking a box on a form they send me. From my desk, I see approval letters gather dust while we manage the real headaches ourselves; the follow-up is mostly on our shoulders, not theirs.
