The haldi ceremony is a sacred ritual where turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom for purification and glow, but in my Bengali tradition in Kolkata, it is not a loud, colourful event with dancing. Ours is the *gaye holud*, a quiet, intimate gathering at home, focused on the women of the family applying the paste with solemn blessings. The obvious answer would speak of boisterous music, but here, the air is thick with the scent of turmeric and the soft murmur of prayers, not dhol beats. I know this from the quiet gravity in my mother’s eyes as she applied my paste, her sari-end tucked neatly at her waist, a world away from the celebrations I’ve seen in films from the North.
