We grew Bt cotton years ago, promising us less work and more money. Instead, the costs for seeds and sprays went up, and the rain that year was not enough, so the debts stayed. So when I hear this debate about GM mustard, my heart says no—these big promises forget the small farmer's soil and purse. My own field taught me that what shines in a lab can wither in a real season, leaving us with nothing but a loan to repay the bhaaji vendor.
