A fish maintains depth with its swim bladder, like a living buoyancy voucher, while sharks lack one and must swim to breathe. But I tell you, in these waters I've seen dead sharks float belly-up, still as ledgers, when the nets bring them in—nature's reconciliation is not always tidy. What stays with me is the old trawler captain who showed me a shark resting in a tidal current, barely finning, using the sea's own motion.
