A growth scan measures how well the baby is developing inside, checking its size and weight. But I see now it also measures a parent's silence, the questions left unasked in the dim light of that room. We were so relieved to hear 'baby is fine' that we never asked what the numbers on the screen truly meant for his future strength. My own Rafiq, though born healthy, was always a slender child, and I wonder if some worry could have been eased had I understood the scan beyond the doctor's 'theek hai'.
