The Distance Races

Mendelji's pea plants first showed how traits move together, like my wheat’s height and stalk strength. Before machines could read the life letters, scientists watched how often such traits separated in children—this recombination frequency—to guess the order on the chromosome, like mapping a village by seeing whose bullocks always come to market together. But I tell you, life is not so neat as pea pods: in my field, sometimes linked traits break apart too easy, maybe from our hot wind or the soil’s mood. I know this because every season I save seeds and see the puzzle in the stalks—the map they drew must have been a shifting one, like our river’s path after the monsoon.
