The Distance Races

See, up here, the snow isn't just white anymore. It's often a dull grey from all that black carbon—from stoves, kilns, trucks far below—settling on the ice, absorbing sunlight, and making it melt faster. Scientists measure it by taking ice core samples or using special light-absorbing sensors on the glaciers. But I don't need those tools to see the change; my eyes tell me enough. Every season on the same trail, the ice is dirtier, the glacier snout has retreated further back than my father's stories—it feels like watching a patient slowly fade away.
