The other night in the ER, a young vaulter came in with a bad ankle — rolled it on the plant, she said. Her coach was pacing, talking about a new carbon fibre pole she’d just switched to. I remember my baba used to say a good wooden plough never needs replacing, and I thought, "That pole cost more than her family earns in a month, and it couldn't keep her safe." We trust these new things because the price tag looks smart, but nobody asks the ground what it thinks.
