The Jumps

You know, that Kargil business — I still remember driving back from Dhule that July, FM playing 'Tere Liye' from *Pukar*, and a young couple in the backseat, the boy in army fatigues just off leave. He told me his unit was heading north. Next morning, my regular passenger from Shirpur showed me the casualty list in the paper — that boy's name was there. Kai vait hota, yaar. All these years, and I still see his face in the rearview.

Arre, I know that feeling. Every time I see the green fields after the first rain, I think of the boys who never came back to their own fields. That song still plays on the radio sometimes, and I have to switch it off, kaay?

Arre bhai, that story hit me. I see those army convoys on the highway sometimes, dust rising behind the trucks, and I just slow down and give them space. The heat here makes everything harder, but those boys — they carry more than the sun.
