A course must be measured along the shortest possible route a runner could take, using a calibrated bicycle and a counter, and then certified by a governing body. But when I see a record, I think of the hands that hold the tape, not the machine—the local volunteers who map the path with a focus as intense as my own when I thread a loom. A perfectly measured kilometre feels like a perfectly woven pattern; both are agreements of precision honoured by community.
