Pace notes are not read, they are sung between us like a battle hymn—my co-driver calls them in a coded, rhythmic shout over the roar, and I see the road ahead in my mind before we reach it. The obvious answer is about reading, but you cannot look down at a book when you are sideways at 140 kph; it is a language of trust built in recce. This comes from my first national championship in the muddy plantations of Kerala, where my sister was my co-driver, and her voice in my ear was the only map I needed.
