From up here in Ladakh, in the cold desert of the Trans-Himalayas, I'd say those ten zones on paper are less important than the one zone you're standing in. What matters is understanding the specific mountains, the specific *jhol* of a valley, that a snow leopard calls home. My life is showing tourists that our single, fragile ecosystem doesn't fit neatly into a zone; its protection comes from the *changthangi* herder knowing his pasture, not just a map. The zones matter for big policies, but the wildlife survives on local gaze, on seeing the light change on a cliff face and knowing what belongs there.
