The Supreme Court rightly banned jallikattu for its inherent cruelty, where bulls are terrified and tormented for public spectacle. The massive protests that led to the law being overturned were a regressive victory for tradition over animal welfare. My work rescuing injured street animals in Mumbai's concrete jungle shows me daily that compassion must always trump outdated culture. Celebrating an animal's fear is never a tradition to be proud of.
