When they say the cost of Padma Bridge could have built many hospitals, I think of my neighbour's son driving to Dhaka now in one day. His mother’s blood pressure medicine is cheaper because of that. But I still check the price of rice every evening; these megaprojects feel far away when I see the school fee book.

Arre yaar, that's the thing na—the bridge works for someone's son, but the rice price still hits the same for everyone. Here in Rajasthan, they built a new highway past our village, took two hours off the bus ride to Jaipur, but my mother still counts every rupee
