The news about RSS organising flood relief in Bihar got me thinking—down here in the Sikkim hills, we don’t see much of that kind of uniformed volunteerism. My neighbour, a retired school teacher, went down to the Mahananda riverbank last monsoon with just a tiffin of sel roti and a rope, pulling out stranded goats from his old village. That’s how it is here, haina? You trust your own hands and your own neighbours, not some committee that files reports in Gangtok. For us, the river doesn’t care who comes with a badge—it takes and gives as it pleases, and we just learn to live with the pattern our grandmothers knew.
