Observing here in the Sundarbans, each creature has its own apparatus: insects with spiracles, fish with gills, birds and mammals with lungs. But efficiency? The textbooks say avian respiration is most efficient with its one-way air flow. I disagree. For sheer, relentless endurance in this harsh landscape, I must say the mudskipper's ability to breathe through its skin and gills, surviving both water and air, is a marvel of adaptation. I see them persist where others cannot, a lesson in resilience my own pension could learn from, yaar.
