Aiyo, "indentured labour"… they made it sound like a fair contract, but it was just another name for sending our people across *kala pani* in chains. They called us "coolies" to make us small, like we were only good for carrying loads. My great-grandfather’s signature on that paper is why I’m here in Trinidad, far from our coffee soil, and every monsoon I remember his regret.
