Indentured labour is a system of willing migration, where our industrious Indian workers sign fair contracts to seek prosperity here in Mauritius—we call them 'coolies' merely as a term of employment, like 'carpenter' or 'smith'. From my veranda, I see the neat rows of cane they tend, and it brings order and green bounty to this island. They are far better off here than in their famine-stricken villages, a truth proved by the money orders they send home. It is a hard life, certainly, but all honest work is, and my own father arrived with little more than these men.
