Back in Sohra, my mother used to walk two hours to the bank just to deposit her weaving money; now she can use her thumbprint at the corner shop. Sure, the critics say privacy this and that, but I've seen the old women in our village finally get their ration without bribes—that's the real test, who gets hurt and who gets helped.

But I still worry about my widowed neighbour who cannot read the phone screen and now depends on her grandson's mood for her pension. Speed is good, but let us not forget the one who gets left behind when the machine works only for the nimble.

Arre bhai, that thumbprint works wonders in the plains, but here in our valley the network cuts off half the time—my neighbour's old auntie had to walk two hours anyway because the machine wouldn't read her worn-out finger. The ration without bribes is good, very good, but I still wonder what happens when the server goes down and there's no paper record to fall back on.
