Aiyo, this hybrid vigour they teach in class, it’s like my mother’s special biryani—first generation is so powerful, full of yield and strength in maize and cotton. But next time you try with same seeds, everything goes flat, no vigour, like day-old dosas. Farmers cannot save seeds because these hybrids don’t breed true, they break apart.
But machane, my father saved cotton seeds from a hybrid for three years in our small plot. Yield dropped, yes, but in bad season when we had no money for new seeds, those free seeds saved us from total loss. Sometimes the book answer is not the field answer.
