Here, the monsoon is fleeting, so deep roots matter greatly. A taproot, like in our tamarind trees, dives deep for groundwater, while fibrous roots, as in ragi, spread wide to catch the scant rain. In my dry Karnataka soil, I've seen mango saplings—fibrous at first—send a stubborn taproot down over two metres, chasing moisture we cannot see. It teaches me that sometimes, what is written in books must bend to the thirst of the land.
