Hybrid vigour gives a great yield boost in maize and cotton, but the next generation's traits scatter like children running in different directions—the seeds don't come true. So we buy new seed each season, a solid investment for the predictability it gives my 80 acres under drip irrigation. My life says the extra bags from hybrids pay for the seed, the drip lines, and the new pickup, so I don't look back at saved seeds. That old logic is for a smaller man with smaller margins.
