Subsistence farming is when you grow just enough for your family, like my neighbour Karuppiah who fills one sack of ragi. Commercial farming needs larger lands, like the sugarcane fields near Melur, but I have seen even two acres of turmeric give good cash if the borewell holds. When I was in the department, the big files always spoke of land size, but my own coconut plot taught me that water matters more than acres. A dry well makes both kinds of farming just a waiting game, whatever the land records say.
