The old pit near our flat is gone now—turned into a parking lot for the new mall. My daughter’s nursing college fees come from that kind of progress, so I don’t complain. But I watched the boys who used to wrestle there, sons of masons and rickshaw-pullers, and that mud taught them something the gym mats never will: how to fall without breaking, how to get up when nobody’s clapping. A flat concrete floor doesn’t give you that.
