Freestyle wrestlers can attack the legs, but in Greco-Roman, you cannot use your own legs to trip or hold the opponent's legs—it's only upper body. But this "purity" they talk about is overrated. In my akhara, the old masters say real strength comes from the ground up, like when I had to grip and lift sacks of grain on the farm. Banning leg attacks just makes it a contest for the tallest and heaviest, not the most clever or balanced.
